What is CAN ?

The term "CAN (or CAN Bus)" itself contains its own definition in it. CAN sands for "Controller Area Network" and it is a kind of Field Area Network and it has BUS topology. The keywords here are "Area Network" and "BUS". You would have the big picture of CAN without reading any more (Of course, you would have to read a lot for detailed picture though).

What is "Area Network" ? It is not easy to define this keywords clearly but it would normally mean "a network connecting multiple things (e.g, PCs or any machines) scattered within a certain area". The most common example of "Area Network" is LAN (Local Area Network). Now you may guess "What CAN is for ?". It is a kind of network that connects multiple Controllers in a certain Area.

What is BUS ? BUS is a kind of connection formation. Following is three most common formations of connections and 'BUS' topology is marked in red rectangle.
