MESFET/GaAsFET

MESFET stands for MEtal Semiconductor Field Effect Transiter. The most popular form of MESFET is GaAs FET (Gallium Arsenide FET).

GaAs FET/MESFET has many common features with the standard JFET, but it offers much better performance especially in the region of RF microwave area.

The key difference between MESFET and MOSFET lies in the method of isolating the gate from the channel. Whereas MOSFET use oxide layer for this purpose, MESFET uses Schottky barrier diode.

MESFET Application

Since MESFET shows superior performance in high frequency, they are mainly used in the area as follows

  • RF/Microwave Power Amplifier
  • High Frequency LNA (Low Noise Amplifier)
  • Oscillators
  • Mixers

How High Frequency I can go ?

Even though MESFET is being widely used in RF Microwave, it can operate in mm wave like up to 50 Ghz and some device can operate even up to 100 Ghz.
