Bias

Confirmation Bias

Confirmation Bias refers to the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms one's preexisting beliefs or hypotheses, while giving disproportionately less consideration to alternative possibilities. In other words, it is the tendency to seek out, interpret, and favor information that confirms our preexisting beliefs or hypotheses, while ignoring or dismissing information that contradicts them.

Followings are some of the examples of Confirmation Bias :

  • A person who believes that left-handed people are more creative might always notice and remember information that supports this belief but ignore or forget instances where right-handed people are creative.
  • A person who believes in astrology may remember instances where their horoscope was accurate and overlook times when it was not.

Anchoring Bias:

Anchoring Bias refers to the common human tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information offered (the "anchor") when making decisions. In orther words, it refers to the tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information encountered (the "anchor") when making decisions or judgments.

Followings are some of the examples of Confirmation Bias :

  • During salary negotiations, the first number that gets mentioned sets the stage for the rest of the discussion. If an employer offers $50,000 initially, all further negotiations are likely to revolve around this figure.
  • A car salesperson might initially quote a high price to make the final price seem more reasonable.

Availability Heuristic

Availability Heuristic refers to the tendency to Overestimate the importance of information that is available to us. This bias occurs because if something can be recalled, it must be important, or at least more important than alternative solutions which are not as readily recalled. In short, it is the tendency to estimate the likelihood or frequency of an event based on how easily examples of it come to mind.

  • After watching news reports about airplane crashes, a person might overestimate the dangers of flying even though air travel is statistically much safer than driving.
  • After seeing several news stories about shark attacks, a person may overestimate the likelihood of being attacked by a shark, even though the probability is very low

Hindsight Bias

Hindsight Bias refer to the inclination to see events that have already occurred as being more predictable than they were before they took place. It's often referred to as the "I-knew-it-all-along" effect. In other words, it is  the tendency to perceive past events as more predictable than they actually were. After an event occurs, people often believe that they "knew it all along" or that the outcome was obvious, even if it was not predictable at the time.

Status Quo Bias

It is the tendency to prefer the current state of affairs and resist change, even when change could be beneficial. This bias can lead to inaction and a reluctance to try new things, even if those things could improve their situation.

Sunk Cost Fallacy

The phenomenon where people justify increased investment in a decision, based on the cumulative prior investment, despite new evidence suggesting that the cost, beginning immediately, of continuing the decision outweighs the expected benefit. The rationale behind this bias is the desire to avoid wasting the previous investment, even if it leads to further losses or suboptimal outcomes.

  • A person continues to invest money into repairing a car because they've already spent so much on repairs, rather than choosing to buy a new car which might be more economically sensible in the long run.

Overconfidence Bias

The overconfidence bias refers to the tendency for individuals to overestimate their own abilities, knowledge, or control over situations.  This bias causes individuals to overrate their own skills, effectiveness, control over situations, or likelihood of achieving success.

  • A student might feel extremely confident about their preparedness for an exam without sufficient study, believing they understand the material better than they actually do.
  • A novice trader, after experiencing a few successful trades, might start to overestimate their understanding of the stock market. Convinced of their trading skills, they might make increasingly risky investments believing they have control over the market outcomes. This overconfidence can lead to significant financial losses when market conditions change unexpectedly, demonstrating that their initial success was more due to luck than skill

Self-serving Bias

Self-serving Bias refers to the tendency to attribute positive events to one's own character but attribute negative events to external factors, protecting self-esteem. It is the tendency to attribute our successes to internal factors, such as our abilities, effort, or character, while attributing our failures to external factors, such as bad luck, circumstances, or other people. This bias helps to protect our self-esteem and maintain a positive self-image.

  • A student who gets a good grade on a test might credit their intelligence, while a student who gets a bad grade might blame the teacher or the test questions.

Negativity Bias

It is the tendency for humans to give more psychological weight to negative experiences or information than to positive ones. It's a psychological phenomenon where the rate of uptake of an idea or trend increases the more that it has already been adopted by others. This can create a snowball effect, where an idea or trend gains momentum and becomes increasingly popular as more people join in.
